Spinal stenosis describes the narrowing of the spinal canal and additional pressure placed on the spinal cord. Stenosis can occur anywhere on the spine, but most often affects the lower or the upper part of the spinal cord. Dr. Steven Garfin, professor and chair of orthopaedics at UCLA reports that though you can be born with this disorder, typically people over the age of 50 are diagnosed with spinal stenosis from aging and normal wear and tear. Surgery, reserved for severe cases, widens the spinal canal and in some cases uses a rod to support unstable portions of the spine. Artificial Disk Replacement Total disk replacement is an investigative procedure for some patients with severely damaged disks. It is done instead of spinal fusion surgery, but it has not yet been shown to be superior to it. The technique implants artificial disks (such as ProDisc, Link, and SB Charite) consisting of two metal plates and a soft core. The surgery can be performed using a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. It is done through tiny cuts using miniature tools and viewing devices. An artificial cushioning device called the prosthetic disk nucleus (PDN) replaces only the inner gel-like core (nucleus pulposus) within the intervertebral space, rather than the entire disk. Back Pain causes a lot of inconvenience and hindrance to the normal lifestyle of a person. There are a number of Back Pain Causes, but the two most common causes related to discs are disc injury and degenerative disc. Disc degeneration leads to water content loss that narrows the gap between two vertebrae. This can cause pinching of a nerve and subsequent pain. Bulging discs are generally confused with ruptured discs. While the former condition is normal, the later condition can be serious. Discs may bulge during the day as they carry the body weight, and get back to normal at night when we sleep. Back pain is generally difficult to diagnose and treat, since there can be plenty of reasons behind this discomfort. Moreover, any type of back pain, be it on the left or right side, prohibits an individual from smooth body movements and one has to continue with his daily chores while bearing the severe or dull back pain. As mentioned earlier, back pain on the right side is quite common and most adults face this problem at least once in their lifetime. The most common cause of back pain is straining of the back muscles due to a wrong posture or due to lifting excessive weight. The worse back pain is sciatica. Sciatica is called the pain starts at the waist and leg ends at a different level each time and can be reached by the fingers. Often combined with numbness and reduced sensation of the area that hurts and rarely malfunction of the muscles of the leg. Due to pressure of any of the roots of the sciatic nerve at the waist by a damaged disk (herniated disk). The symptoms of the crisis are very close to those of simple back pain as a therapeutic approach. They need strong painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs usually over 15-20 days as bedtime. The spinal column is made up of vertebrae that sit in a column with spongy discs between them. These discs are jelly-like, but occasionally they can tear. When they tear, the jelly inside can leak out and cause a herniation. This is a bulge that can push against the spinal cord or any of the nerves that come out from it. When this happens, the patient will usually experience pain, numbness and tingling in the area that the nerve supplies feeling to. There are treatments for disc tears that range from conservative, such as medications, to radical, such as surgery. Back pain is one of the most common problems that plague people these days. When the pelvis is off balance, it can cause pain in the lower back, groin area, thigh and buttocks. When the SI joint that is on the right hand side is strained, the pain will be centralized to that area. While this is the usual case it is not always the situation. There have been claims of damage on the right side causing pain in the left side. An injury resulting from SI pain can be anywhere from a dull ache to a stabbing sensation that causes restricted movement. Spinal Stenosis. One of the most debilitating pain is the back pain, it can make your life very uncomfortable. Instead of taking over the counter pain medication, it is advisable to do some exercises for pain relief. One of the main reasons behind people experiencing back pain is weak core muscles. The entire important spinal cord is supported by the core muscles and they absorb most of the shock and jerks we experience while going about with the activities in our daily lives. Strengthening the core muscles is the key to avoid back pain, the core muscles include the abdominal muscles, back muscles and the glute muscles. Muscle tension is often the cause of back pain. Sitting, especially for extended periods of time, causes muscles to get tired and stiff. The sitting position can also interfere with blood circulation in the lower body allowing less oxygen to get to nerve and muscle cells in the back. You are at higher risk for low back pain if you have bad posture, don't exercise and are overweight. When muscular back pain occurs, heat and exercise can increase blood and oxygen to the area. Exercise can also help you to improve your posture. Try to distribute your weight evenly when seated and avoid slouching in your chair.
